1）兩者通用
在表達提出某種建議的意思「... 怎麼樣；... 好嗎?」時，"how about" 和 "what about" 是可以互換的，亦即意思是一樣的：
"how/what about a drink?"
(喝杯酒怎麼樣?；喝杯酒好嗎?)。
"where should we go on vacation?"
"how about hawaii?"
"what about japan?"
(「我們該去那裡度假呢?」，「去夏威夷怎麼樣?」，「去日本好嗎?」)。
2）what about
若是徵求意見或打聽訊息，你只能使用 "what about"：
"what about the university?" (強調 about 這個字)
- 這是 "how about ...." 無法表達的意思。
3）how about
可以用來表達對事物的驚訝："how about those dogs?"
- "what about " 則沒有這項意思。
如果你提供多項事物讓人選擇，那麼必須使用 "how about" ：
"here are three jackets you might buy. how about the grey one?"。
